Recovering from Multiple Extractions

Posted .

It’s not uncommon to have a few existing teeth extracted before your dentist at Fox River Periodontics, PC can fit you for your new set of dentures. There are a few aftercare tips to keep in mind for speedy recovery after multiple extractions.

Sometimes a multiple extraction procedure calls for you to be deeply sedated. If so, you will need to arrange to have someone drive you and help you at home for a little while as you get back on your feet.

If you use tobacco products on a regular basis you might want to talk to your primary physician in advance about a tobacco cessation program. Regular tobacco use irritates healing gum tissues, which increases recovery time and increases your chances of infection. Try to select a program that doesn’t call for using lozenges or nicotine gum as these are also known gum irritants.

During the recovery process your gums will be a little bit tender, so you will need to stick to a soft foods diet. This involves foods like applesauce, mashed potatoes and yogurt. You will also need to stay properly hydrated. Drink plenty of lukewarm liquids without using a straw, as the suction can harm the incisions or pull blood clots loose from incision sites.

Don’t be alarmed if a little blood to weeps from the incisions for a few days after surgery. You can lightly pack the area with sterile gauze. After the bleeding stops, you can rinse your mouth gently with lukewarm salt water to remove blood clots and soothe the gums.
